When you take a look around your home, you’ll notice nice walls and ceilings. This beautiful feature in relatively all homes is drywall – you probably just don’t notice it!

Did you know that the word drywall became a word prior to WWII? Walls used to be constructed of plaster, which was time and labour intensive. Plaster required a number of layers, which took a long time to dry because it was very wet. So people were very happy when their time was drastically reduced from using drywall.

There are a number of different types of drywall, so exploring the options will allow you to choose the right drywall for the job.

Regular/Standard Drywall

Regular drywall is what you probably see in most ceilings and walls inside of your home or in buildings. The board is made up of gypsum, which is a mined mineral and has a number of uses, including chalk and wallboard. Standard drywall comes in a variety of thicknesses and sizes, and is considered the most economic choice for most interior jobs.

Purple Drywall

Purple drywall is similar to regular drywall, only it has superior moisture resistant properties. Purple drywall is used in ceilings and internal walls.

Green Board

Green board is similar to that of conventional drywall, however green board’s outer paper covering resists water. It’s called green board because one side of the board is green! The purpose of the green paper is to differentiate the drywall from standard drywall. It’s also helpful to help the installer see where they’ve applied drywall compound.

Green board is best used in damp places, such as basements. The board is covered in a mold-resistant coating, which makes it a great alternative to regular drywall for areas of high humidity or moisture.

Plaster Base Drywall

Plasterboard, or blue board drywall, is commonly used in areas where water and mold are of concern, as the board has special absorption qualities. This type of board is also used for veneer plastering. One significant advantage of blue board over standard drywall is the appearance. Blue board is smoother, more evenly toned, and stronger.

Fire Resistant Drywall

Fire resistant drywall is commonly used in areas like garages, apartment buildings, and hotels. Building codes usually state this type of drywall is mandatory in buildings for safety purposes. As the name suggests, fire resistant drywall acts as a buffer that protects inner areas of a building/home, allowing time for people to escape to safety. This board generally has a burning time of approximately 1 hour.

Fire resistant drywall can also be used as a sound barrier. This type of board is the most expensive drywall on the market, so speak to your drywall company or building supply company for competitive rates.

Paperless Drywall

Like conventional drywall, paperless drywall contains a gypsum core. However, the difference between the two is that instead of an outer wrapping of paper, fibreglass is used. The fibreglass eliminates a major food source for mold (paper), which makes it a great extremely resistant to mold growth and moisture. Paperless drywall offers a slightly textured finish, which requires joint compound to smooth it out.

Soundproof Drywall

Soundproof drywall is often used in places that require noise reduction between rooms, such as studios or auditoriums. This particular drywall board is comprised of alternating layers of gypsum and other materials like glue. The layers help reduce vibrations, which absorbs sound instead of transferring it through to the other side of the wall.
